Kris,  

You are right! Trash goes to dumps (Groundwater probs eventually) and WWTP hits either GW or rivers/creeks/ etc.  Both can caus problems but those are not the only two options!!  

You need to get acquainted with Mary Applehoff, educator and entrepenuer "par excellance".  Worms in your kitchen  ( or other living spaces) do not count as pets, and hence are allowed in apartments and other "fancy" restirctive living quarters.  They are great!!  Their population and container can be sized for anything singles to elementary schools and university cafeterias.  

You can reach Mary at 616-327-0108, for an education or for materials from the worm bin to the critters themselves.  As you can tell, I'm "high" on this lady.
