E-M:/ Conner Creek Power Plant

Enviro-Mich message from GreenPlanet <riccawu@MNSi.Net>

Dear Enviro-Mich and all US/Detroit Clean Air activists:

The Citizens Environment Alliance of SW Ontario has just learned that the
Conner Creek Power Plant (the old "Seven Sisters") on the shores of the
Detroit River across from east Windsor is to be fired up (permit response by
July 1?) AND IT WILL BE BURNING COAL. Does anyone have information on
this? Perhaps we missed it on Enviro-Mich previously. We also understand
that the reason for not burning natural gas is the usual nonsense about cost
and availability of cheap coal. Obviously Michigan is not considering
costs to human health or damage to the Detroit River ecosystem. No doubt
the last thing to be considered would be transboundary pollution. Can some
one let us know?

According to ALA Lungnet alert Michigan was only one of 5 states in the
Ozone Transport Assessment Group (OTAG) not to endorse the US EPA proposals
to address regional (and transboundary) transport of ozone smog. Coal
burning will add to the already burdened ecosystem of the Detroit River.
Trenton Michigan also has a power plant that continues to burn coal and
impacts on the Detroit River and the transboundary communites of SW Ontario:
Lasalle, Amherstburg, Windsor, Essex County, Kent County, etc.
