EPA REACHES AGREEMENT WITH DEMOLITION OPERATOR ON
ASBESTOS VIOLATIONS; INCLUDES $16,000 FINE

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 5 has recently
reached agreement with Peter O'Dovero doing business as Associated
Constructors  (Marquette, MI) for alleged violation of Federal asbestos
regulations at a demolition site in Assinins, MI.  The agreement includes a
$16,000 civil penalty.

EPA cited the company, which is owned and operated by O'Dovero, last
September for demolishing a tribal center of the Keweenaw Bay Indian
Community in February 1997 without notifying the proper authorities, as
required by regulations.

"EPA is committed to enforcing the asbestos regulations to protect public
health and the environment," said David Kee, director of the regional Air
and Radiation Division.  

Asbestos is a known cancer-causing substance that can cause
mesothelioma (a type of lung cancer) and asbestosis (a lung disease)
many years after exposure.
