Enviro-Michers -- ALERT -- ALERT -- ALERT

While it takes months to move stuff of substance, evidently the Legislature
moves with alackrity when money issues are involved.

The DNR FY99 Budget Bill, HB 5591, is up before the full House possibly as
soon as TUESDAY next week. This bill includes the MANDATED TIMBER MARKING
LEVELS ON MICHIGAN'S STATE FORESTS (section 903).

PLEASE TAKE TIME TODAY, OVER THE WEEKEND AND ON MONDAY TO REGISTER YOUR
DISAPPROVAL OF PROVISION, AND ASK YOUR REP TO REMOVE THIS SECTION FROM THE DNR
BUDGET BILL!!! Call (517) 373-1837 (Capitol Switchboard) and ask to be
connected to your House Representative (if you need the name, please contact
me and I can find it!) and let them know you oppose this provision!

I posted some of the reasons this is an idiotic mandate previously, but will
reiterate some below:

- This mandated timber level sends a message to Michigan citizens that THE
ONLY THING OF VALUE ON MICHIGAN'S STATE FORESTS IS LETTING THE TIMBER INDUSTRY
CUT TREES.

- Whether you are a HUNTER, HIKER, CAMPER, CANOEIST, BERRY-PICKER, MOREL
COLLECTOR, CROSS COUNTRY SKIER, HORSE BACK TRAIL RIDER, MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDER,
OFF ROAD VEHICLE TRAIL RIDER, THIS PROVISION GOES AGAINST YOUR INTEREST AS A
TAXPAYER AND A USER OF MICHIGAN'S FORESTS.

- The timber mandate also hurts the state economically by forcing the DNR to
put up timber that may undercut competition from private forest lands, that
will almost certainly be of lower value with less value-added (that is produce
FEWER JOBS in the wood products industry despite more quantity), and that
don't reflect the best judgement of the professionals who work in the DNR, but
who instead are told to get the timber marked, regardless of whether it makes
sense!!

- With deer populations well above carrying capacity, AND deer TB a threat to
farmers, encouraging increased clearcutting (which this would do) with no
thought to other effects is clearly dangerous.

Millions of Michigan citizens count on our State Forests to provide more than
just wood products -- Michigan's legislators need to know that you want YOUR
STATE FORESTS to be treated as something other than the Timber Industry's
private TREE FARMS!!!
