E-M:/ DDT and Estate Sales!

Enviro-Mich message from anne.woiwode@sfsierra.sierraclub.org

Joe Kaplan, a biologist working on loon research, passed along a horrifying
thing. He visited an estate sale in his family's neighborhood in Bloomfield
Hills and discovered among the items in the garage bottles of Chlordane and
DDT. Since these were labelled, he could identify them but others were
unlabelled so it is unknown what was in them

He points out that the estate sale handlers apparently had no idea these were
there, and that had he not located them and secured them so that they could be
taken to the County Health Department they would undoubtedly would have been
tossed into the garbage and ended up in a regular landfill. Even worse,
someone might have picked them up and used them, not really registering what
they had gotten!!

Does anyone know about whether estate auctioneers are being urged to make sure
they AREN'T selling or improperly disposing of such toxic materials? Joe is
very interested in pursuing this issue with anyone who knows more about it or
would like to get some publicity to this kind of problem!! He can be
contacted by email at < piprapipra@aol.com >.
