E-M:/ Next Steps on the Timber Mandate in DNR Budget Bill

So what is the state of play after the dust settled? In particular,
does the second amendment cure the problems you perceived
with the first? Regards.

Tracy: Thanks for the question! In fact, what the Scranton amendment (the
one that passed) does, if applied literally, is to force ALL the mandated
855,000 cords of timber marking (and, consequently, all timber cutting) onto
the Pere Marquette State Forest and the Escanaba River State Forest, 2 of the
6 State Forests, which are the only ones with adopted State Forest management
plans! This is clearly untenable, but it also virtually guarantees that this
issue must be brought up in the Senate and again in Conference Committee in
the House.

We are STILL wanting to see the entire of Section 903 deleted, and ask readers
of Enviro-Mich to now turn their attention to their members of the Michigan
Senate. The Senate Subcommittee on Natural Resources and Environmental
Quality is scheduled to hear the DNR Budget Bill, HB 5591, on Tuesday
afternoon, May 5, which will be the most likely time that this topic will be
discussed.

Calls and letters to the Subcommittee members, which also include Harry Gast,
Chair of the Appropriations Committee, would be very much appreciated. In
addition, because the Budget Bills may move very fast through the Senate, it
is worthwhile contacting your State Senator now and asking him/her to oppose
any mandated timber marking floor in the DNR Budget Bill, HB 5591. The
Capitol Switchboard allows you to call one number and be connected to your
Senator's office as long as you know the name -- I am happy to provide anyone
with the name of your State Senator if you don't have it!

Phil Hoffman (R-Horton) phone: (517) 373-2426

Don Koivisto (D-Ironwood) phone: (517) 373-7840
                                              fax: N/A

Alma Wheeler Smith (D-Ann Arbor) phone: (517) 373-2406
                                              fax: (517) 373-5679

Thanks again to all who are taking action on this issue!
