Enviro-Mich message from Poulsondav <Poulsondav@aol.com>

It's small, starved and has a plan. It's "The Plantinator."
The Plantinator - also known as the Galerucella beetle - is the secret weapon
of scientists bent on controlling purple loosestrife.

Convincing people in places like Grand Blanc, Davison, Swartz Creek or Clio
that their actions affect the river's quality - and making them care - is
perhaps the greatest challenge of a new Flint River Watershed Coalition,
organizers say.

This idyllic scene occurred last week on the Flint River, north of Flushing.
Standing in stark contrast to its urban woes - where the waterway has been
dammed, channeled, banked in concrete, stripped of its wetlands and labeled a
polluted eyesore - the river is an unrealized wildlife treasure, outdoor
enthusiasts say.

The city of Kalamazoo's wastewater system has a book value of $120 million.
But it's coveted for more than its financial worth.
"It holds the key to the future growth of the county," City Manager Pat
DiGiovanni said.
