Subject: Ronnie Dugger in Detroit in Ann Arbor, May 8-9 & 11 with Alliance
This weekend, people in the Detroit area and beyond who are concerned about
the direction in which our nation is proceeding and in representing the
people instead of transnational corporations are invited to a special
conference with Alliance for Democracy (AfD) co-founder, noted author,
contributor to Nation magazine, and founder of the Texas Observer, Ronnie
Dugger, to mutually discuss what we can do to take back control of our
lives by establishing a true democracy and attaining social-economic
justice and equity. The conference is free.
An article written by Dugger titled, " A Call to Citizens: Will the Real
Populists Please Stand Up," printed in an August 1995 issue of The Nation
(copies available at the conference) catalyzed the formation of a grass
roots movement that came to be called the Alliance for Democracy. The
national organization is made up of over 50 autonomous local chapters plus
at large members across the country.
The common thread that has caused environmentalists, labor people, peace
groups, women's rights organizations, health care advocates and many other
social justice minded individuals to band together is the recognition that
organized big corporate interests have systematically maneuvered themselves
into positions of such influence that the interests of common people have
become secondary. The increasing acquisition of material and financial
wealth at the expense of others and the environment must be stopped.
All institutional authority should and must come from the will of the
people. It's time to identify and assert that will.
