E-M:/ DFP Op-Ed on Timber Marking Mandate

Enviro-Mich message from anne.woiwode@sfsierra.sierraclub.org

An opinion piece, by Marvin Roberson of Sierra Club, regarding the DNR Budget
bill and mandated timber marking levels appears in today's Detroit Free Press.

The op-ed piece is timely because on Wednesday the Senate Appropriations
committee is scheduled to take up HB 5591, the DNR budget bill, after which i
will go to the Senate floor. The Approps. Committee seems unlikely to have
time to look seriously at ANY bills before it Tuesday or Wednesday -- each day
has several Dept. budget bills listed.

With the probability that the Senate Approps. Committee will pass HB 5591 with
the timber marking mandate still in place, this is the time to CONTACT your
STATE SENATOR and ask him/her to work to REMOVE SECTION 903, which contains
the language mandating 855,000 cords of timber be marked on State Forest lands
in FY 99! Please contact me if you need more info -- like who your Senator
is, and how to contact him or her!
