E-M:/ lead bills moving toward law

Enviro-Mich message from Dave Dempsey <davemec@voyager.net>

On Thursday, the State House of Representatives approved two bills designed
to protect children and workers from lead poisoning. By overwhelming
margins the House approved H.B. 5561 and S.B. 1047 and sent both to the
Senate. The bills establish a training and licensing requirement for lead
abatement contractors and authorize the Department of Community Health to
initiate programs to prevent childhood lead poisoning and to report on
levels of blood lead screening among Michigan preschool children. There
are more than 40,000 lead-poisoned children in Michigan, most exposed
through paint in homes built before 1950.

The state faces a June 1 deadline to establish a licensing system for lead
abatement contractors, or risk losing federal abatement grants.
