Enviro-Mich message from MUCC <mucc@mucc.org>

Last week's action alert is considered to be a success. MUCC
appreciates all of the letters and phone calls that went to
Representative Wetters and the other members of the House Committee on
Agriculture. Thanks to those who participated.

As a result of the letters, the fourth substitute does contain better
language for the environment; however, there is still room for
improvement and Representative Wetters still plans to report the Drain
Code (H.B. 4337) out of Committee to the House floor before the summer

We need your backing again to write letters and keep
the pressure on until better language is written into the bill.
Specifically, we would like to see stronger language that:

removes the provision of the bill allowing for maintenance
assessments on state lands (i.e. state game and recreational areas,
spells out a clear definition of improved/unimproved as it
pertains to
state lands,
expands the permitting processes to include all extensions and
improvements and inclusions of a private drain into a drainage district,
includes protection of natural areas purchased for their natural
qualities from drainage,
includes protection from drainage of natural waterways and
drains that
have reverted to a natural state, and
removes the definition of a drain that includes every natural

Please use the above points to write to the members of the Committee on
Agriculture and/or Representative Wetters and let them know that you, a
constituent and voter, need to see the above amendments in the bill
before you can support it.
