E-M:/ lead poisoning bills on way to governor

Enviro-Mich message from Dave Dempsey <davemec@voyager.net>

The Michigan Legislature has finished work on two bills to combat lead
poisoning. Both bills, H.B. 5561 and S.B. 1047, are on their way to the
Governor for signature.

The bills meet a federal requirement for a lead abatement contractor
certification and licensing law, needed to maintain the state's eligibility
for federal lead abatement grants. The state faced a June 1 deadline to
enact such a law.

Also included in H.B. 5561 are a number of provisions designed to prevent
lead poisoning, including the establishment of a state lead poisoning
prevention strategy, lead hazard awareness programs for do-it-yourself
remodelers, required reporting of blood lead screening rates among
preschool children, and the development of appropriate maintenance
practices for owners of rental property to reduce or prevent lead hazards
to tenants.

Thanks go to the bill's sponsors, Rep. Gloria Schermesser and Sen. Dale
