Michigan's U. S. Congressman Joe Knollenberg from Oakland/Wayne County
is on a targeted Subcommittee where there is an imminent
proposal to roll back toxic mercury air pollution requirements.

Contact Joe Knollenberg today if you are from his
district. Also, Knollenberg has been trying to slip a rider
into EPA's appropriations bill that would prohibit the agency
from acting on concerns about global warming.

Here is Knollenberg contact information:

Clean Air Advocates--

We just learned that a House Subcommittee on Appropriations is trying to get
report language included in the full committee report that would prohibit EPA
from making a regulatory determination on mercury emissions from coal-fired
power plants FOR YEARS.

Mark-up is scheduled for Thursday, so we need to get calls into offices urging
them to strike this report language.

CALL THE CAPITOL SWITCHBOARD: 202-224-3121--committee members listed below.

Specifically, the report language currently reads that EPA should:
1. wait until the Lake Superior study is completed--a 3-year study that hasn't
started (the study will evaluate mercury deposition rates from 2 plants). THIS
INFO. WILL COMPLEMENT WHAT EPA EXPECTS TO FIND THROUGH ITS PROPOSED MERCURY
MONITORING FROM COAL PLANTS.
2. wait until the NHANES study is finished--this is an ongoing program that
looks at fish consumption patterns, does exposure measurements, etc. THE INFO.
COLLECTED WILL BE USEFUL, BUT WE DON'T NEED TO WAIT UNTIL MORE DATA IS
COLLECTED.
3. wait until the National Academy of Sciences does a comprehensive study on
mercury's health effects and revisit their reference dose. EPA JUST FINISHED A
7-YEAR STUDY ON MERCURY--AND THEY HAVE THEIR OWN PROCESS FOR REVIEWING THE RFD,
AND WILL BE MEETING WITH OTHER FEDERAL AGENCIES IN NOVEMBER TO REVIEW THE LATEST
HEALTH STUDIES.

If you have specific questions, call Felice at the Clean Air Network,
202-289-2403.
