POSITION  ANNOUNCEMENT
Immediate Opening

MEC LAND PROGRAMS ASSISSTANT
The Michigan Environmental Council (MEC), a Lansing-based, nonprofit
coalition of over 50 of the state's leading environmental organizations,
seeks an enthusiastic and knowledgeable assistant for its Land Stewardship
Initiative.   The successful candidate will be able to advance the
Stewardship Initiative goals of bringing sound land use practices to
Michigan through community-based demonstration projects, diverse
partnershps and responsible public policy.


ABOUT THE POSITION
The primary duties of this position are to assist the Land Programs
Director in the following program areas:

Coalition building and outreach--assist with grassroots organizing,
faith-based outreach program and information requests; plan and implement
leadership training workshops

Communications--maintain web site; prepare briefing memos, updates,
correspondence, news releases, newsletter articles, reports  and other
materials; prepare and deliver public presentations

Program administration--manage databases and electronic listservs, assist
with small grant program management

Policy analysis--research, evaluate and develop land use policies, monitor
state and federal legislative activities.


COMPENSATION
The full-time position is funded for two years and includes excellent
benefits.  Salary ranges from $20,000 - $25,000 per year commensurate with
qualifications.


QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants should have a Bachelor's degree at a minimum.   Work experience
or educational emphasis in natural resources/environmental policy or
urban/environmental/land use planning preferred.   Computer proficiency a
must.  Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to work
independently and balance simultaneous projects, highly organized,
flexible, outgoing, people sensitive and possessing integrity and the heart
of an advocate are all necessary attributes for the position.
