Brownfields/Environmental Outreach Specialist

Technical Assistance for Brownfields Communities (TAB) Program
Great Lakes & Mid-Atlantic Center for Hazardous Substance Research
Michigan State University

Background:  The Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic Center for Hazardous
Substance Research has a full-time position for a Brownfields/Environmental
Outreach Specialist.  The position is part of the U.S. EPA grant-funded
Technical Assistance for Brownfields Communities (TAB) program.  The TAB
program will provide technical assistance to Brownfields communities in an
eleven-state region (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana,
Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Delaware, and Maryland) and
the District of Columbia.

Duties:  The Specialist will participate in an interdisciplinary team
involving faculty, staff and students with expertise in environmental
engineering, public health, risk assessment, hazardous waste management and
legislation, and community development.  Duties will include interaction
with community members, state and federal regulators, and university
faculty and students.  A BS degree in environmental, civil or chemical
engineering (or related engineering field), environmental science, public
health or public policy is required.  Experience in management of the
Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) process under the
Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act
(CERCLA or "Superfund") and the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization
Act (SARA) and community rights under the Emergency Planning and Community
Right-to-know Act (EPCRA) is helpful.  Excellent writing and public
speaking skills and proven ability to work with community groups are also
required. 

Employment site:  Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering,
Michigan State University.  Extensive travel may be required.  Position
available immediately.  Competitive salary depends on qualifications.
