Beneath the Great Lakes?
Public Debate Featuring State Experts

 Ever since Newstar Energy USA drilled its first well from a site north
of Manistee in March, 1997, the question of whether to tap oil and gas
reserves beneath Lake Michigan has been one of the most contentious
environmental disputes in the state.
 On Tuesday evening, August 18, a panel of experts on energy development
will debate the issue in a public forum at the Manistee County
Courthouse at 415 Third Street  in Manistee. The forum is the first of
two that will be held in the region. The second is scheduled for
September 9 at 7:00 p.m. at the Muskegon Community College, Main
Building, in the Blue and Gold Room.
 Charlene Wild, the chairman of the Manistee County Board of
Commissioners, will moderate the meeting. The featured panelists
_ Don Inman, former Deputy Director of the Department of Natural
_ Harold Fitch, chief of the Geological Survey Division of the
Department of Environmental Quality.
_ Hans Voss, Managing Director of the Michigan Land Use Institute.
_ Christopher Bzdok, environmental attorney with Olson, Noonan, Ursu and
Ringsmuth of Traverse City.
_ Bill Boss, vice president of Newstar Energy USA, Inc.
_ Mindy Koch, chief of the Real Estate Division of the Department of
Natural Resources.
 The public forums on Great Lakes drilling are co-sponsored by the
Michigan Land Use Institute, the Michigan Energy Reform Coalition, the
Lake Michigan Federation and the Michigan Environmental Council.
