What are the chances of a train derailing and spilling chemicals on Muskegon
city property?
City commissioners admit it's not likely, but they're not willing to take a
chance - particularly when an accident of that type could leave the city
responsible for environmental cleanup.
The commission Tuesday voted 4-3 to turn down a chance to purchase 7.7 acres
of property in Lakeside from CSX Transportation Inc. for use as part of the
Lakeshore Trail, a bicycle/ped- estrian path.

GRAYLING - The water supply in Grayling is contaminated, so folks are
scrambling to stock up on bottled H2O.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality issued a boil water notice
for the city on Friday afternoon, advising residents to boil their drinking
and cooking water for the next 48 hours.

Flint residents in three flood-prone areas soon could get permanent relief.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency will give the city $1.1 million to

After failing to negotiate a purchase price for part of the former Teledyne
plant site, Muskegon city officials will try to seize the downtown property in
court so they can use it for their Shoreline Drive extension project.
The Muskegon City Commission Monday tentatively voted to start "eminent
domain" proceedings against Teledyne Industries Inc. in Muskegon County
Circuit Court, to seize approximately 13 acres of property just west of Ottawa
Street.
