E-M:/ fishery commission proposes habitat strategy and action plan

Enviro-Mich message from Dave Dempsey <davemec@voyager.net>

As a member of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, I'm pleased to announce
a public comment period on a draft Great Lakes aquatic habitat strategy and
action plan proposed for Commission adoption. The public comment period
ends on October 15. The Commission is actively seeking public comments on
this important proposal.

The strategy arises out of concerns that current regulatory schemes, while
checking the loss of habitat to an extent, are failing to assure the
long-term sustainability of habitat necessary to support Great Lakes fish
stocks as well as healthy aquatic ecosystems overall. The strategy and
action plan propose measures which parties to the Strategic Great Lakes
Fishery Management Plan (SGLFMP) could undertake to reverse the loss of
essential habitat and to restore habitat in the future.

Persons interested in commenting on the aquatic habitat strategy and action
plan can do so in the following way:

1. By reviewing a copy of the documents, available on the Commission's
website: www.glfc.org/habitat or by requesting a copy directly from the
Commission offices at 2100 Commonwealth Blvd, Ste. 209, Ann Arbor, MI
48105, 734-662-3209 x. 10

2. By making comments via the internet through an on-line form available
(through website listed above) or by mailing comments to the address listed
above. Again, the comment period ends October 15th, 1998.
