Genesee Twp. - Genesee County could lose a proposed $160-million steel mini-
mill project and its estimated 200 jobs to Ohio because of a U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency investigation that could jeopardize the
plant's operating permit.
The EPA probe into whether the state violated the civil rights of the proposed
plant's neighbors when it granted an operating permit could take six months.
If violations are found, the permit, which was granted in May, could be
amended or rescinded, federal and state officials said.

Surrounded by some of the ugliest scenery in town, U.S. Sen. Spencer Abraham
campaigned in Jackson Tuesday for an environmental ballot proposal.
Standing outside the derelict Pittsburgh Forgings Co. plant off Water Street,
Abraham lobbied about a dozen community leaders to support the "Clean
Michigan" proposal that would borrow money to clean up such places.

  A self-imposed target date to have a Washtenaw County Hazardous Materials
Response Team established has come and gone, but organizers still hope to have
the team up and running by the beginning of next year.
The team would be able to respond to chemical spills, hazardous materials
fires, and other emergencies where toxic substances threaten people and the
