E-M:/ plan to sell Great Lakes water revived

Enviro-Mich message from Dave Dempsey <davemec@voyager.net>

A report in the Toronto Star says, "A Saulte Ste. Marie company is making a
splash once again by reviving plans to sell Lake Superior water to Asia."
The Nova Group, which touched off a controversy last spring with its permit
to take 600 million liters a year out of Lake Superior for export, has
asked the Ontario environmental appeal board to overturn the Ontario
environment ministry's cancellation of the permit.

"If they let this go through, then companies in the U.S. and Mexico will
have the same right to draw exactly as much water as Nova," said Reg
Gilbert of Great Lakes United.

In response to the report, Michigan Congressman Bart Stupak has asked for
consideration on the House floor next week of his measure, House Resolution
418, that would encourage the President and Administration to take
necessary steps to ban the sale or diversion of Great Lakes water to
foreign countries, businesses, corporations or individuals.
