Dear Mr. Sagady:

Can you post the following to Enviromich?

Jack McHugh
Rep. Kaza Chief of Staff

Michigan State Representative Greg Kaza
42nd House District
P.O. Box 30014
Lansing, MI 48909-7514
517-373-5945 fax

Subject: Paperless Legislature Question.

On each day the legislature meets, approximately 100 pages of new bills,
substitutes, analyses, etc. are distributed to 110 state Representatives
and 38 state Senators. The legislature meets approximately 90 days a year.
This translates into approximately 1,332,000 pieces of paper used in the
normal course of legislative business. Legislators also receive various
reports and communications from state departments which probably double
this number.

Question: How many trees could be saved by an on-line legislature that did
most of its business by computer and used approximately 2,664,000 less
pieces of paper each year?

Additional comments and ideas related to the potential for technological
innovation in the legislature and state government would be welcomed.
Please e-mail them to: gkaza@house.state.mi.us

Thank you for your time and attention.
