E-M:/ Pictured Rocks Resource Mgt Plan Revision

Enviro-Mich message from anne.woiwode@sfsierra.sierraclub.org

We just got notice the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is revising its
Resource Management Plan(RMP) and seeking input on a draft plan. This plan
"is the basic planning document for preserving natural and cultural resources"
of the park. The RMP will describe the park's natural and cultural resources,
provide an overview of the "state of knowledge about issues of concern", and
will describe how the park intends to address these issues. Among specific
issues being considered in the plan are the need for development of a
comprehensive ecological inventory and monitoring program, a "sound and
defensible fire management program, and staffing needs, in particular for
plant and aquatic ecologists. From the cultural side, the issues include
research, planning and management considerations, including development of
management plans, and ethnographic work.

As the newsletter we received notes: "Revision of the Pictured Rocks Resource
Management Plan will occur throughout 1998. The revised draft plan will be
submitted to our regional office in Omaha by December 1998. Anyone wanting
more information about the Pictured Rocks RMP or a copy of the draft plan, or
wishing to comment on the plan, can contact Brian Kenner at (906) 387-2607 or
