ENVIRO-MICH FOLKS: We have written here before about the Riders of the
Apocolypse coming on as attachments to the Interior Appropriations Budget in
the US Senate. The vote in the Senate may be as early as next TUESDAY.
Senators Carl Levin and Spencer Abraham should hear from you on this --
Capitol Switchboard # below. PUT A NOTE ON YOUR REFRIGERATOR TO CALL THEM
BOTH ON TUESDAY MORNING (after Labor Day) TO ASK THEM TO SUPPORT THE BAUCUS
AMENDMENT!!  Anne Woiwode

 TAKE ACION!!  VOTES TUESDAY!!

 Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) has decided to take the lead in offering an
 amendment to strip many of the anti-environmental riders from the Interior
 Appropriations bill when it comes to the Senate floor next week. We expect a
 vote as early as Tuesday afternoon, but it could slip until Wednesday.
 Please call your senators and let them know that they should support Senator
 Baucus' amendment to remove anti-environmental riders from the Interior
 funding bill. Among other things, his amendment would strip riders that
 would:

 * More than double logging rates in the Tongass National Forest in Alaska,
 America's largest National Forest;

 * Grant a right-of-way for the first road ever built through designated
 Wilderness, a 30-mile road through the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge in
 Alaska;

 * Override environmental laws and put the brakes on efforts to restore
 threatened salmon populations in the Snake and Colombia Rivers of the
 Northwest by prohibiting any changes in federal dam operations without full
 congressional approval;

 * Require that any National Forest area slated for ecological restoration
 burning programs first be clearcut, making a mockery of new Forest Service
 efforts to restore true forest health;

 * Delay new government rules designed to end an oil industry tax break that
 costs taxpayers over $60 million each year, money that is supposed to be used
 for education and the purchase and protection of special places.

 * Prohibit the National Park Service from enforcing laws that protect Glacier
Bay National Park from commercial fishing operations, and override a
comprehensive public planning process for fishing in the Park

 Call today! The US Capitol switchboard number is 202-224-3121.
