Enviro-Mich message from Michael Boyce <birder@voyager.net>

According to GREENLines, Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, In a report released
recently by The World Wide Fund for Nature, World Conservation Union,
and the World Conservation Monitoring Center, one-tenth of the world's
known tree species are in danger of extinction, according to a 9/6 AP
story. The "World List of Threatened Trees" report attributes
over-cutting, grazing, and human encroachment as major threats.
Populations of one thousand species in the study have dwindled into the
tens. World Conservation Monitoring Center's Mark Collins called forest
destruction, "the key threat to species worldwide."

Perhaps our good friends at the Sierra Club or others working on forest
issues could tell us of the threats to native Michigan tree species. I
for one would be quite interested.
