Although I have never posted a message here, I have enjoyed reviewing what has
been posted. I have also become more knowledgeable. I now feel that I may
have information that should be of interest to those who would subscribe here.

Tomorrow, Sept. 16, the Senate committee referenced above and chaired by David
Jaye, will take up several Bills. I think some of these are (or should be)
important to the environmental/resource minded community.

A Bill was introduced today in the Senate, and will be taken up on Wed. by
Jaye, that would allow falconers to take wild raptors in Michigan. It would
also allow them to buy and sell these birds. With the exception of rabbits
(thanks to Sen. D. Koivisto) no other protected or game animal may be taken
alive from the wild and reduced to private possession. The falconers propose
to become the first to not only take from the wild, but then to commercialize
on it. This Bill was introduced by Sen. George McManus I believe.

Another Bill, this time sponsored by Jaye himself, would allow the picking of
mushrooms in wilderness and natural areas. Sounds innocuous enough, doesn't
it? However, these types of areas provide many values and even the public
picking mushrooms may have a negative impact.

I realize that these issues may not sound earth shaking...but I think that
they are predictive of what may be in store for statutes that serve to protect
the environment in other ways. I would be interested in seeing how others
feel.
