E-M:/ Alert: Drain Code Update

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enviro-Mich message from Julie Stoneman <juliemec@voyager.net>
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rep. Howard Wetters drain code bill, HB 4337, is still tentatively
scheduled for debate today (Thursday) on the House floor. Please continue
to call state representatives urging them to oppose the bill. MEC, MUCC,
League of Women Voters, Sierra Club and others oppose it.

Rep. Karen Willard introduced her alternative bill, HB 6095, in the House
yesterday with two Republican cosponsors, Reps. Jon Jellema and Greg Kaza.
Efforts to have her bill referred to the House Conservation Committee,
where chances were very good to get it passed out, were rebuffed by the
Speaker of the House, Curtis Hertel, when he referred it to the House Ag
Committee instead. Since the Ag Committee is chaired by Wetters, who will
not likely take up Willard's bill, Hertel's move suggests some
behind-the-scenes deal making. It's critical
that calls to reps continue to stop HB 4337.
