E-M:/ Resolution of Crystal River fight on horizon?

Friends:
Earlier this week the Leelenau Peninsula Conservancy announced that they and
the Nature Conservancy are moving toward efforts to purchase the Crystal River
property near Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, with the goal that the
property would be included within the boundaries of the Lakeshore and acquired
by the Park Service!! This offers a potential resolution to a long festering
fight over whether this unusual river and associated wetlands would be
developed into a golf course and condo development.
However, for this effort to succeed, the Congress must both alter the
boundaries of the National Lakeshore and appropriate funds for acquisition of
the property (the Nature Conservancy would purchase the land to hold it until
all the legislative hoops are negotiated, thus taking the risk to assure
protection of this place). Because of this, our U.S. Senators, Carl Levin and
Spencer Abraham, and the US. Representative in that area, Bart Stupak, are
critical to making this project a success.
PLEASE TAKE TIME NOW TO WRITE TO SENATORS LEVIN AND ABRAHAM AND CONG. STUPAK
URGING THEM TO INTRODUCE LEGISLATION TO PROTECT THE CRYSTAL RIVER AND INCLUDE
IT IN SLEEPING BEAR DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE!!! While the end of the
Congressional session is close, meaning that action may not occur until next
year, a show of commitment NOW by these three key elected officials will
certainly increase the chances that protection can be achieved.
Write to the Senators at: United States Senate, Washington,DC 20510
Write to Congressman Stupak:U.S. House of Representatives, Washington,DC 20515
THANK YOU ALL!!
