E-M:/ Today's Drain Code News

Enviro-Mich message from Julie Stoneman <juliemec@voyager.net>

The drain code was not debated in the House yesterday and
will not likely be debated today (Wednesday). Many rumors continue to fly,
but it looks as if Rep. Wetters' bill, HB 4337, will not be taken up this
week, leaving it for the lame duck session. But anything can happen so
calls to state representatives continue to be important. Again, MEC, MUCC,
Sierra Club, League of Women Voters, Michigan Land Use Institute, West
Michigan Environmental Action Council, and Clean Water Action oppose HB 4337.

Meanwhile, Rep. Karen Willard's alternative vehicle for drain code reform,
HB 6095, is on the agenda of the House Agriculture committee tomorrow
morning. It's fate is uncertain because Wetters' chairs the Ag Committee.
Several groups have endorsed Willard's bill as a better vehicle to bring
the code into the 21st century. To voice support for HB 6095, call House
Ag Committee members. Reps. Bogardus, LaForge, and,or course, Willard, do
support HB 6095.
