 Muskegon County is no longer singled out as Michigan's only ozone-violator
county under new Clean Air Act regulations released Thursday by the
Environmental Protection Agency.

WASHINGTON - The hammer is coming down on Midwestern power plants in a
pollution crackdown by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency aimed at
reducing smog in the East.  Coal plants - including four operated by Consumers
Energy Co. in Bay City, Muskegon, Erie and Port Sheldon near Grand Rapids -
produce more than half of the region's electricity.

  Ottawa County's favorite beaches remain safe for swimming, but high levels
of bacteria continue to plague some streams.

The battle over access rights to a small Lake Huron beach near Au Gres -
already litigated and now threatened by new litigation - has enlisted yet
another attorney.
This time, it's costing public money. The Arenac County Road Commission has
hired a Lansing attorney to help define its role in the beach debate.

GENESEE COUNTY - Suburban school districts, especially those in the rural
areas south of Flint, are growing so fast that even educators wonder where the
students are coming from.  In Genesee County, Grand Blanc, Fenton, Holly and
Goodrich school districts each reported increases. Flint and Beecher
encountered the largest enrollment losses. Flint had been stable for the past
several years, but Wednesday's count showed a loss of 357

FLINT - Typical Flint customers would be hit with an immediate 21 percent
increase in the cost of water if a new pipeline to Lake Huron is built.

to-Flint water pipeline that could replace the region's dependence on Detroit.
