Enviro-Mich message from anne.woiwode@sfsierra.sierraclub.org

Ray: Michigan has approx 19 million acres of forestland. Approx. 2.7 million
is in National Forest land, State Forest land is 3.9 million, approx 200,000
acres in county forest land. Additional forested lands are in National Park
ownership (Isle Royale alone is 137,000 acres) and other public lands.
Industrial forest land is around 2.3 million acres. There is a small percent
in farmer's woodlots, and the rest is generally categorized as non-industrial
private forestlands, divided among hunt clubs, private recreational properties
and those who manage woodlots. There has been a huge amount of information
about ownership patterns done by a wide range of folks -- some current
research is underway at MSU on this. A report put out a few years ago called
the Trends Future report looked at all landuse patterns in Michigan, including

Could someone give me the percentage breakdown of public lands ownership in
MI (Federal, State, County) and number of acres owned by each entity vs.
land in private ownership? Is there any documents that shows only forested
acres and ownership patterns within those areas?
