MUSKEGON COUNTY - Urban sprawl is intensifying in Muskegon County, and
researchers say the conversion of farmland to subdivisions and shopping
centers will soon become a crisis unless steps are taken to better manage

ANN ARBOR - Just days before Washtenaw County voters will decide on a tax-
supported land preservation program, a conservative think-tank today released
a report critical of such an approach to urban sprawl.

GENESEE TWP. - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is expected today to
reject a civil rights complaint that could have killed a proposed $195-million
steel mill, EPA sources and opponents of the mill said.

MANISTEE TOWNSHIP - The state has ordered closure of two wells where foul-
smelling and potentially deadly hydrogen sulfide was released. Eleven people
sought hospital treatment after the latest mishap.

BAY CITY - The 10-acre wetland adjacent to Kolb Elementary School now has a
name: The Nathan Weidner Environmental Area.
Trails will be developed and improved and teachers will use the park for an
outdoor lab where students can study ecology, biology, art and ornithology -
and where folks can just hang out in the marsh in the middle of town.

A winding stretch of the Au Sable River in Oscoda County is a better home for
trout, ducks and otters today following an unusual project to create new river

FLINT - Flint is willing to discuss a reduction of the 35 percent markup on
water it sells to Genesee County, provided a new contract with Detroit offers
the savings to pay for it.
