ENVIRONMENTAL COMMUNITY FILES FORMAL COMPLAINT WITH ELECTION BUREAU OVER
BRANDENBURG'S FALSE AND MISLEADING ADS

BRANDENBURG CHARGED WITH DISTORTING POSITIONS ON POLLUTER PAY AND LAKE ST.
CLAIR.

GROUP LAUNCHES RADIO ADS TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT

The environmental community lashed out at State Senate hopeful, Jack
Brandenburg today, charging his campaign with deliberately misrepresenting
his own position and the position of State Senator Ken DeBeaussaert on Lake
St. Clair and the environment. In an effort to set the record straight,
Michigan Clean Water Action Vote Environment (MCWAVE*) took to the airwaves
to inform the public. In a related effort, Clean Water Action filed a
formal complaint with the Michigan Bureau of Elections over false and
misleading ads.

"Electioneering is one thing, but a blatant distortion of the truth is
another," said Cyndi Roper, director of Michigan Clean Water Action and
MCWAVE spokesperson. "The environmental community will not sit by as
Brandenburg and his allies misrepresent the truth about Ken DeBeaussaert's
record on Lake St. Clair and on his commitment to making polluters pay for
the damage they do. That is why we are taking the unprecedented step of
filing a formal complaint with the Bureau of Elections and going to the
airwaves to cut through the half truths and lies."

A multitude of pro-Brandenburg campaign literature and radio spots
characterize State Senator Ken DeBeaussaert as forcing tax payers to pay for
environmental clean-ups while letting polluters off the hook, and for being
weak on protecting Lake St. Clair. Yet an examination of DeBeaussaert's
voting records shows that he voted against the weakening of Michigan's
polluter pay laws in 1995 and has been at the forefront in securing funding
to protect and clean the lake.

"Brandenburg is lying about Ken DeBeaussaert's record and about his own
position on Lake St. Clair," said Dave Dempsey, a spokesperson for MCWAVE.
"Brandenburg wants to join the forces in Lansing who have gutted Michigan's
polluter pay law and have delayed the cleanup of the Lake. He's trying to
cloak himself in green garb just to get elected. DeBeaussaert is clearly the
superior candidate. He's made the cleanup of Lake St. Clair his priority
from day one in the Senate."

"The really disturbing thing is a candidate like Brandenburg trying to get
away with charges that have absolutely no basis in reality," continued
Roper. "With all the issues surrounding Lake St. Clair, the people of
Macomb County deserve the truth."

To emphasize their point, MCWAVE, a non-partisan environmental political
committee that endorses candidates for office based upon their environmental
positions, kicked off an outreach to inform voters of the reality of the
campaign. "In addition to reporting Brandenburg to the Election Bureau for
distorting positions, we will report him to the voters," said Roper. "This
man must be shown that when it comes to Lake. St. Clair and the environment,
Brandenburg will be held accountable for his words and actions. For us this
is not simply about the election, it is about getting the truth to voters.
Macomb County does not need this do-anything-to-win politician."

*MCWAVE is a registered state political action committee. MCWAVE does not
provide cash contributions in support of candidates. However, in key races,
such as Senator DeBeaussaert's, MCWAVE conducts in-kind activities to the
voting public through its door-to-door outreach effort and volunteer phone
program.
