E-M:/ is lafarge cleaning up or not?

What appeared to be a major victory for environmental activists is now in
some question, according to the Alpena News.

On October 23, the paper reported that Lafarge Corporation announced its
intention to discontinue the burning of hazardous waste at its Alpena
cement kiln by June 1, 2001. The company has been receiving hazardous
waste from major Michigan manufacturers as a cheap fuel source for
approximately a decade, over the objections of citizens concerned about the
public health and environment. Leading the fight has been the Huron
Environmental Action League (HEAL).

On October 29, the paper reported that Lafarge has not withdrawn its permit
application to the DEQ to be a permanent hazardous waste fuel burner. DEQ
officials expressed confusion about whether to continue processing the
application in light of the still-pending permit application, but
recommended concerned citizens contiue submitting comments to the agency.
