E-M:/ MUCC applauds DEQ's decision regarding Humbug Marsh

Enviro-Mich message from MUCC <mucc@mucc.org>

For Immediate Release
December 2, 1998

LANSING, Mich.-The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality
announced today that it will not allow modification of the conservation
easement protecting a unique island marsh in the Detroit River.
Still in question is the portion of the easement that protects the
mainland side of the last remnant of Great Lakes coastal marsh on the
Michigan side of the river.
In a press release, the DEQ said a developer's permit application had
been denied and the island portion of the easement will remain intact.
But department officials said they would reconsider plans for the upland
portion of the property if certain criteria were met.
Leading the charge to protect Humbug Marsh is the state's largest
environmental and conservation organization, the Michigan United
Conservation Clubs (MUCC). "MUCC is extremely pleased that the DEQ has
done the right thing," said Sam Washington, Interim Executive Director
of the MUCC. "We are; however, cautiously waiting to see what will
happen to the mainland portion of the conservation easement."
Back in September, a public hearing was held to receive public comment
on the proposed project. Nearly 1,000 citizens from across the state
turned out to give their opinions about the proposed development of
Humbug Marsh and the resounding message was "Save Humbug."
"Our main concern was and is protection of the easement; all portions."
Washington said. "MUCC considers the DEQ's decision today as a
tentative victory, hopefully with more on the way."
