E-M:/ dwarf lake iris bill passes!

Enviro-Mich message from Dave Dempsey <davemec@voyager.net>

Lovers of Michigan's natural heritage can take heart from today's approval
by the State Senate of a bill making the dwarf lake iris our official
wildflower. By a 36-1 vote the Senate passed and sent to the Governor H.B.
4923, sponsored by Rep. Liz Brater. The dwarf lake iris is a
federally-listed threatened species originally discovered in Michigan and
whose chief global habitat is the Lakes Michigan and Huron shorelines in
northern lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Jeopardized by burgeoning
shoreline development, the iris can become a symbol of Michigan's efforts
to balance conservation and growth.
