E-M:/ senate dumps out of state waste bill, legislature pushes electric deregulation into 1999

Enviro-Mich message from Dave Dempsey <davemec@voyager.net>

Inaction was both good news and bad news for concerned Michigan
environmentalists watching the last day of legislative session, which
wrapped up about 3 a.m. today.

The State Senate tabled S.B. 4, a measure limiting out of state solid waste
imports to Michigan, leaving the doors open to continued shipments of trash
from states that permit landfill disposal of materials Michigan has banned
from dumping.

The State House refused to take up a Senate-passed electric utility
industry restructuring bill (SB 1340) which contained no environmental
safeguards to protect our lungs and environment from massive coal burning.

The new Legislature will have to address these issues in the 1999-2000
session that begins in January.
