Enviro-Mich message from Carrie Spencer <cspencer@concentric.net>

Thanks for the input on my query on the GM/Saginaw River settlement. My
story on the Confined Disposal Facility appears in Wednesday's Saginaw
News. Unfortunately, it's on the feature page, and for whatever reason
those stories don't make it to our website. I'll see if i can pull
strings.
Some of the questions from my original posting were answered, but then
did not fit in the scope of the story, so a quick update:
Regarding concerns on whether alternatives were explored, the Corps of
Engineers Environmental Assessment on the project did contain only two
options: store on the CDF or no action, but that was the scope of their
decision-making abilities. The other alternatives, such as treatment or
inland disposal, had been considered by the Fish and Wildlife Service in
the settlement decision. Their proposal to the Corps was to agree to
take the stuff or not.
Regarding the tree roots, both the Corps and FWS assure that cottonwoods
have shallow root systems. The dredgings on the island are about 15 feet
deep. In any case, there is a permanent layer of water under the spongy
soil and above the clay liner; the roots die before they penetrate,
explained Lisa Williams of FWS.
Since those didn't make the cut, but the issues were raised in this
forum, I thought you folks deserved an update.
The rest appears tomorrow!
