The Breast Cancer Fund
The Breast Cancer Fund is working nationally and internationally to find
better ways to detect, treat and, ultimately, prevent breast cancer. We also
work to make sure the best possible medical and psychological care is
available to women living with the disease. The Fund identifies and develops
seed funding for cutting-edge research projects that show promise of
significant breakthroughs, as well as to innovative education, patient support
and advocacy programs. The Fund also conducts its own advocacy campaigns and
works in collaboration with other organizations to build broad public support
for all efforts to end the breast cancer epidemic.
Andrea Martin
Founder and Executive Director of The Breast Cancer Fund
In 1992, Andrea Martin, a successful attorney, restaurateur, political fund-
raiser, mother and breast cancer survivor founded The Breast Cancer Fund.
Martin and a dedicated group of board members, established The Fund to change
the status quo by raising awareness and placing funds in to innovative and
promising areas of breast cancer research, education, patient support and
advocacy. The Breast Cancer Fund is especially committed to research and
advocacy efforts that can uncover and eliminate the avoidable cause of breast
cancer.
In 1989, at the age of 42, Andrea Martin was diagnosed with a fast-growing
tumor in her right breast, just weeks after her sister-in-law lost her battle
with the disease. She underwent a mastectomy, a grueling year of
chemotherapy, and was given a 40% chance of surviving for five years. In
1991, while working on now-Senator Dianne Feinstein's race for the
governorship of California, she was diagnosed with an unrelated tumor in her
left breast and underwent another mastectomy. Ms. Martin's own experience
with breast cancer the illness and death of friends and family members and
the fact that her young daughter is now at abnormally high risk for developing
the disease, has sustained her commitment to stopping the epidemic.
As The Breast Cancer Fund's Executive Director, Ms. Martin travels frequently,
throughout the United States and abroad, making presentations and consulting
with researchers, health care providers and other breast cancer organizations.
She works closely with local, state and federal government officials to create
new breast cancer policies. Ms. Martin serves as an advisor to the California
Division of the American Cancer Society and the University of California in
San Francisco. She served as one of the first patient advocate peer reviewers
in the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program. Ms. Martin has
become a leading spokeswoman on environmental links to the disease and breast
cancer and sexuality.
