JOB DESCRIPTION: IDAHO CONSERVATION LEAGUE NORTH IDAHO INTERN

Idaho Conservation League is a nonprofit conservation organization founded
in 1973, and has grown to more than 3,000 individual members.    The
primary office is located in Boise Idaho, with state offices in  Moscow and
Wood River Valley.  ICL's mission is to conserve and protect Idaho's
natural resources.  ICL is seeking an intern to work in the North Idaho
office for a minimum of 8 weeks   (full time).  ICL is an equal opportunity
employer.  The successful candidate will work on one or more of the
following  activities:

1. Data collection in the field related to motorized vehicle use and water
quality throughout the Clearwater River Basin.

2. Distribution of material to ICL members and the general public by
various means including handouts at trailheads.

3. Organize and advertise one hike in the Clearwater Basin for the general
public to showcase the natural resource values of the region.

4. Collect and file relivant newspaper articles and other papers.

5. Help up-date the Wild Clearwater Coalition web page and send out
information to local e-mail list.

6. Write comments on proposed Forest Service activities in the Clearwater
Region.

7. Assist in the research of important conservation issues such as
wildfire, old growth and/or mudslides.

Necessary Skills and Qualifications:

Strong research skills; able to investigate specific problems as directed,
pursue informational needs, and synthesize complex issues for general
understanding;

Strong communications skills in writing and editing;  and development of
public information material ( letters to the editor,  fact sheets, etc.)

Independent, highly motivated, able to work under pressure, with frequent
deadlines and with moderate supervision.

Ability to travel and collect data.

Ability to start in June 1999

Wages and Benefits:

Compensation of  $1,500 for 8 weeks.  Due to the temporary nature of
internships, interns do not receive benefits, such as health insurance and
paid vacations.  Some travel allowance will be available.

Job Announcement: Wildands CPR Outreach/Issues Coordinator

Wildlands Center for Preventing Roads (Wildlands CPR) is reviving the heart
of wild places.  We work to protect and restore wildlands by preventing new
road construction, promoting road removal and revegetation and deterring
motorized recreation in wild lands.  We are  a national clearinghouse for
information and resources to help individuals fight roads and motorized
recreation.

Wildlands CPR is looking for an energetic, motivated, self-directed
outreach/issues coordinator to develop and implement an integrated outreach
program and track road issues of national significance.  This person will
spend about half their time in our Missoula office, following issues,
writing comments on road fights of national significance and developing
outreach tools.  The other half of their time will be spent presenting this
information throughout the country.  The outreach/issues person will
conduct workshops, develop volunteer opportunities and generally expand the
scope of Wildlands CPR*s programs.

Specifically, the outreach/issues coordinator will:

1) Develop and implement an integrated outreach program: -upgrade/improve
existing Wildlands CPR information materials -develop materials appropriate
to a variety of different audiences especially people traditionally not
associated with the environmental movement. -develop connections with media

2) Track and comment on road issues of national significance.

In addition to his/her main responsibilities, the outreach/issues
coordinator will also participate in other aspects of Wildlands CPR's work,
such as:

1) Work with the director and development director to develop the outreach
program.

2) Work with member organizations to develop road outreach programs they
can use, such as setting up volunteer road monitoring crews.

3) Lead Wildlands CPR workshops when appropriate.

We desire the following qualities in an outreach/issues coordinator:
Excellent public speaking/ written communication skills; previous
experience with natural resources/public lands advocacy; knowledge/
understanding of conservation biology; experience with activist campaigns;
ability to organize and plan; desire to travel; motivation and enthusiasm;
strong commitment to grassroots environmental work.

This is a permanent, full-time staff position, salary ranging from
$22-24,000 depending on experience.  Health care is provided.  Send cover

Position Summary:

The Y2Y Science Coordinator is a full-time position responsible for
overseeing and managing the completion of two critical components of the
Y2Y workplan over a three-year period. The Science Coordinator will work
closely with the Y2Y Coordinating Committee and its staff, the
"Conservation Plans 2000" Committee which provides guidance in development
of regional conservation plan design and mapping, and with groups and
committees from the sub-regions comprising the Y2Y, working on the same
tasks:

1) Coordinate and facilitate science-related aspects of the  "Conservation
Plans 2000" program, which is the design and integration of seven
science-informed regional conservation plans into a single conservation
plan for all of the Y2Y. Primary duties include:

* Take lead responsibility for organizing biologists and other experts in
order to establish a) general science guidelines for conservation plans,
b) GIS data standards for regional mapping of proposed conservation plans,
and c) standards or guidelines for the integration of aquatics and
fisheries data with terrestrial data in order to produce integrated
conservation plans;

* Assist regional conservation planning groups in the development of the
science component of the workplans for each of seven regions;

* establish a science advisory panel and a network of scientists and others
ready to help regional and Y2Y-wide conservation plan efforts, including
any necessary research;

* work with other Y2Y staff to accumulate scientific materials from a
variety of sources and identify knowledge gaps, prepare and disseminate
materials relevant to 7 regional mapping charettes;

* help identify and initiate independent research needed to fill
information gaps for the conservation plans and facilitate engagement of
the scientific community in the mapping process, particularly in the
development of hypothesis that test the effectiveness of regional
conservation plans;

* resource the regional charettes; identify, track down and deliver
scientific/spatial data sets to contracted GIS experts working  in each
region and insure standardization in mapping;

* oversee the compilation of the maps from each region into one Y2Y-wide map;

* oversee the scientific review, ground-truthing, and revisions of the
Y2Y-wide map;

* oversee the production and printing of all mapping products and publications;

* liaison with scientists and conservationists on overall mapping effort;

* coordinate all science related aspects of the Y2Y CP2000 program with the
work of other ENGOs and scientists;

* work with the Y2Y Coordinator and other staff  in developing and
administering the budget of the scientific components of the conservation
plans;

* work as a liaison between scientists in the conservation planning process
(both at the Y2Y-wide and regional levels) and the Y2Y Coordinating
Committee and Council

2) Coordinate and facilitate the Biosciences component of the Y2Y workplan.
The maps produced for the year 2,000 will be based on biological
information. Further biological questions will need to be answered to
refine the conservation plans. This component addresses that need. Primary
duties include:

* assist with identification of research priorities and the information
needed to develop defensible science-based conservation plans;

* design and host periodic meetings and workshops with key Y2Y scientists
regarding specific areas of bioscience interest, to review the progress of
Y2Y science and to establish new directions and projects and to provide
overall advise to those undertaking mapping efforts;

* oversee and manage specific Y2Y science research contracts;

* oversee the storage and coordination of Y2Y data;

* oversee and manage the publication of materials arising from any of the
above;

* assist in the development of outreach materials with science components.

Qualifications:

An equivalent of a masters degree in ecology or a related field, with
emphasis in conservation biology; at least five years professional
experience in a natural science field; experience with natural resource
management preferred; computer proficiency, including a keen understanding
of GIS applications as a tool for conservation science; experience working
with grassroots conservation organizations; excellent organizational
abilities; excellent communications skills, including writing,
presentations and interpersonal; experience in managing complex project
tasks, deadlines and support staff; ability to show initiative, work
independently, and function efficiently with limited support staff and
within a complex organizational setting; demonstrated commitment to the
conservation and protection of biodiversity.
