Watershed Management Conferences

The Michigan Water Environment Association will be sponsoring its second and third conferences in a series of three early in 1999. For more information please contact Tad Slawecki, Limno-Tech Inc (734 332 1200) or Fred Cowles, MDEQ (517 335 4127).

February 17, 1999	Best Management Practices for Watershed Protection
Lansing Midway Hotel
This will be a *nuts and bolts* conference on what you need to know about storm water and nonpoint source pollution control in urbanized areas. Extensive handout material will provide a level of detail unusual for a one day conference. The three basic types of Best Management Practices (Structural, Vegetative, and Managerial) will be covered by a variety of interesting speakers. Storm water detention basins will be analyzed from several perspectives. Rain Gardens will be introduced. Illicit connection program design, implementation, and experience will be covered in detail. An innovative septic system management program will be proposed. All in all, this is a program packed with information that will be vital to individuals involved in storm water management.

We recommend that at least one person from each community covered by EPA*s proposed Phase 2 Storm Water Regulations attend. The information gained from this conference will be essential in meeting the challenges of storm water management in a cost-effective manner. Representatives from industries with storm water permits will find a lot of useful information at this conference. Consultants and environmentalists are welcome, too.

March 31 and April 1, 1999	Watershed Management Planning Workshop
MSU Kellogg Center, East Lansing
This two day conference will be a collaboration with the Michigan Section- American Water Resources Association, Michigan State University- Institute of Water Research, and Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and a host of secondary sponsors. The purpose will be to introduce individuals actively working on Watershed Management projects to those with a desire to engage in Watershed Management. Salient issues will be identified and discussed in detail: in theory and in practice. Watershed Management involves the *Quality of Life* issues, not just the *comply with the regulations* issues. Watershed Management Planning will be covered in depth, from concept, through organization and development, to implementation. Approved Watershed Plans are necessary to qualify for nonpoint source grants under the Clean Michigan Initiative.
