E-M:/ Environmental links to breast cancer
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enviro-Mich message from marybeth@ecocenter.org (Mary Beth Doyle)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Andrea Martin, Founder and Executive Director of The Breast Cancer Fund,
will discuss the connection between environmental pollutants and breast
cancer in a series of talks around Michigan, January 31 through February
2nd. The
lectures are sponsored by the Ecology Center and Health Care Without Harm,
and are free and open to the public.
In 1960, a woman's lifetime risk of breast cancer was one in 20. Today, it
is one in eight. While most research focuses on finding a cure for the
disease, scientists and breast cancer activists are increasingly examining
the role of toxic pollutants in causing it.
In 1992, Andrea Martin, a successful attorney, restaurateur, political
fundraiser, mother and breast cancer survivor, founded The Breast Cancer
Fund. Martin and a dedicated group of board members established The Fund to
change the status quo by raising awareness and placing funds in to
innovative and promising areas of breast cancer research, education,
patient support and advocacy. The Breast Cancer Fund is especially
committed to research and advocacy efforts that can uncover and eliminate
the avoidable cause of breast cancer.
