Planning for Malletts Creek Restoration Begins

Ann Arbor, MI - The Washtenaw County Drain Commissioner has contracted
with a team of experts to develop a recovery plan for Malletts Creek. To
be completed by the end of 1999, the plan will serve as a blueprint for
comprehensive steam restoration. Residents, landowners and businesses
will be provided many opportunities to participate in this community-wide
effort. Experts in ecology, stream management, engineering and computer
modeling from the firms of Environmental Consulting and Technology,
Applied Science and Tilton & Associates have partnered on the project.
The City of Ann Arbor and Pittsfield Township are funding the $300,000
plan.

Malletts Creek begins in Pittsfield Township, and passes through many Ann
Arbor neighborhoods including: Lansdowne, Cranbrook, Georgetown, Bryant,
Brown Park, Pattengill, Kimberly Hills, Jewett, Burns Park, Ives Woods and
Ann Arbor Hills. It joins the Huron River at South Pond, just north of
Huron River Drive. Residents within the 'creekshed' have formed the
Malletts Creek Association (MCA) -- a group dedicated to protecting and
restoring the quality of the stream. "Much of the land drained by
Malletts, historically farmland and pasture, has been developed," MCA
member Jesse Gordon said. "This increases runoff making Malletts a very
'flashy' creek, susceptible to flooding and downstream erosion."

"This plan will not only address structural concerns, including flooding
issues, but will focus on restoring the Creek's natural resource
functions," says Drain Commissioner Janis Bobrin. "Stream flow, water
quality, habitat and aesthetics, they're all interdependent. A
comprehensive restoration strategy will improve stormwater management and
help restore the Creek's ecosystem."

Coordinator Harry Sheehan at (734) 994-2525.
