PUBLIC INPUT NEEDED ON STATE FOREST MANAGEMENT IN ESCANABA FOREST MANAGEMENT
UNIT, ESCANABA RIVER STATE FOREST:

The Escanaba River State Forest (ERSF) in the center of the U.P. has sent out
notices of their upcoming Compartment Review for the Escanaba Forest
Management Unit (FMU). The Escanaba FMU of the ERSF is partly in Menominee
County and Delta County, and the Compartment Review will look at management
activities on approximately one-tenth of the acreage scattered in compartments
across the FMU. (contact DNR for complete location information).

Compartment Reviews are the only opportunity for direct public input into
State Forest management decisions, and are the actual place where DNR staff
decide management activities, including timber sales, old growth designation,
trails location, etc. on State Forests. DNR now requires that there be an
Open House to solicit public input prior to the actual decision making
meeting. You can also choose to submit written comments or to attend the
Compartment Review meeting and have direct input during the decisionmaking
meeting. If you would like more details on how this process works, please
contact me directly and I can get you the information.

To have a clue as to what is being proposed, you can request the Compartment
Review packets from the DNR contact people listed below -- while written
somewhat in jargon that makes it hard for the uninitiated to understand, the
packet includes maps of the location of areas under consideration, proposed
harvest activities and other treatments, and usually additional information
that should help understand the proposals. The Open House is supposed to be
both a chance to ask questions and to provide input, but Sierra Club STRONGLY
urges you to attend the Compartment Review itself and submit written comments,
not simply relying on verbal comments at the Open House, which is not set up
as a hearing or formal input session.

Also, the ERSF is one of only two State Forests that have a Forest Plan. If
you do not have a copy of the plan, and you wish to comment intelligently
about the proposals, you should ask the DNR for a copy.

The Open House is scheduled:

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 25
4:00 P.M. TO 7:00 P.M. CENTRAL TIME
MENOMINEE COUNTY ANNEX BUILDING
US 41
Stephenson, MI

contact Eric Thompson at the Stephenson DNR Field office (906) 753-6317 or
Dennis Nezich at the Escanaba DNR office (906) 786-2354 for more information.

There is no information about the location, date or time of the Compartment
Review itself, however. Also, details on where to submit written comments are
not clear, so those wishing to follow this issue should contact the above DNR
officials to get the requisite information!
