E-M:/ Knowing the Players -- Congress

Envir-Mich folks:

Several Michigan Congressional Representatives will serve on Congressional
Committees that determine issues affecting the environment and natural
resources. These Reps. are particularly important both because they have a
say and a vote on specific pieces of legislation as they are shaped in
committees, and also because their colleagues will often defer to the greater
awareness about the details of a bill and follow that Reps. lead.

As Michigan citizens, you should feel free to contact any Michigan Rep. who
serves on a Committee to urge their action on issues of concern, even if you
live outside that district. Likewise, contacting Committee Chairpeople is
always valid regardless of where you live in the country.

Here are some of the positions held by Michigan Reps:

Appropriations Committee (Note: Approps has become increasingly the arena for
truly awful provisions which would not survive if they were introduced as
stand alone legislation - in fact many stand alone bills were added to the
Omnibus Appropriations Bill passed last year by Congress, where they got
little attention because of the sheer bulk of the bill)

Joe Knollenberg
Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick

Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development:
Knollenberg

Subcommittee on Transportation:
Kilpatrick

Subcommittee on VA, HUD and Independent Agencies (where EPA and Forest Service
funding, among others, is decided):
Knollenberg

Sucommittee on Foreign Operations, Export Financing and Related Programs:
(NAFTA, MAI, issues relating to endangered species trafficking, export of logs
from National Forests, import of pathogens, etc.):
Kilpatrick
Knollenberg

Commerce Committee (formerly chaired by Dingell, this committee's mandate
often takes in many environmental issues, such as air pollution)
Fred Upton
John Dingell
Bart Stupak

Resources Committee (National Parks and Forest Service lands, and many related
issues):
Dale Kildee

Subcommittees Kildee serves on:
National Parks and Public Lands
Forests and Forest Health

NOTE: Last year Debbie Stabenow and Nick Smith both served on the Agriculture
Committee, which also addressed National Forest issues. We do not have the
committee list yet for this committee, but assume they will both continue to
serve on this committee.
