Enviro-Mich message from Dave Dempsey <davemec@voyager.net>
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The new chair of the Senate Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs
Committee, Sen. Ken Sikkema, held an organizational meeting of the panel
today. The committee has tentatively scheduled presentations by DEQ
Director Russell Harding on Feb. 9 at 3 p.m. and by DNR Director K.L. Cool
on Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. to hear on the agencies' environmental and natural
resource agendae. The committee is also expected to meet Feb. 23 to hear a
report from the 4-H Youth Conservation Council, and on March 2 to receive
reports on Great Lakes issues from the Great Lakes Commission and DEQ.

In his introductory remarks, Sen. Sikkema said the Legislature's job is to
provide for stewardship of natural resources while affirming shared values
such as equity and private property rights. Sen. Harry Gast noted concerns
in his southwest Michigan district about out-of-state trash entering
Berrien County from the Chicago area and Indiana.

It appears action on major legislation in this committee will not take
place until March.
