E-M:/ mec adopts 1999 priorities

Enviro-Mich message from Dave Dempsey <davemec@voyager.net>

The Michigan Environmental Council has adopted priorities for improving
Michigan's environment and protection of natural resources in 1999. These
are: land stewardship, including legislative work on a "smart growth"
agenda; protecting children's health, including an aggressive childhood
lead poisoning prevention campaign; assuring a sustainable environment and
sustainable economy, including electric industry restructuring that gives a
boost to efficiency and renewable energy sources; open government,
including reform of the DEQ's closed-door decisionmaking process; and
protecting our water resources, including the allocation of $90 million
from Proposal C to clean up Lake St. Clair and to protect Lake Superior,
and action to prevent Great Lakes water diversions.

More information on these priorities will be posted on MEC's web site in
the next few weeks.
