JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
LAND AND WATER POLICY SPECIALIST
Michigan United Conservation Clubs
Lansing, MI

The Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC), a non-profit citizens
conservation organization with more than 100,000 active members, is
seeking a highly qualified individual to serve as a full-time Land and
Water Policy Specialist.  The successful candidate will work within the
Resource Policy Division to help bring about positive change in
environmental policy in Michigan and will be an advocate for such
change.  An emphasis will be placed on current water quality issues in
the Great Lakes Basin and on developing a sound, aggressive approach to
problems associated with a lack of land use planning.  The position
requires an individual to work out of the MUCC Headquarters in Lansing.

Responsibilities:
· Develop and implement sound, aggressive approaches and solutions to
problems associated with a lack of land use planning.
· Review and interpret technical documents and comment on
science-related policy proposals including wetland fill permits.
· Administer Wetlands Watch program.
· Represent MUCC before the Michigan Legislature, individual
legislators, legislative work groups, and forums by preparing and
communicating testimony on bills.
· Represent MUCC in various coalitions relating to water and land use
issues.
· Represent staff at board meetings and executive committee meetings.
· Contribute to Michigan-Out-Of-Doors magazine on a regular basis
through feature articles, conservation issues, and legislative updates.
· Prepare position papers relating to land use and water issues.
· Prepare action alerts, press releases, and other communiqué to inform
and mobilize constituents on important, timely issues.
· Write opinion editorials and features for print media.
· Provide scientific, technical expertise in assigned areas.
· Identify and work towards resolution of regionally significant water
quality issues.

Qualifications:
· Masters of Science degree in a related discipline or a Bachelors of
Science degree with four years of related professional work experience.
· Familiarity with Michigan statutes that govern the use of land, water,
and wetland resources.
· Working knowledge of the Department of Environmental Quality
permitting processes.
· Strong understanding of land use planning.
· Exceptional ability to understand complex scientific issues and
translate that information into terms and language commonly understood
by the general public.
· Excellent oral, writing, computer, and interpersonal skills.
· Public policy and/or natural resources advocacy experience is
desirable.
