E-M:/ Letters needed to MI Congressional Reps. on ESA

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enviro-Mich message from Karen Tuerk <ktuerk@execpc.com>
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Folks,

In the next few weeks, Rep. George Miller (D-CA) will reintroduce his
bill to strengthen and reauthorize the Endangered Species Act. He has
requested the help of grassroots activists throughout the country to
encourage Members of the House to sign on as co-sponsors in order to
move this bill forward. The bill places a greater emphasis on the
"recovery" of species which are threatened or endangered and gives
incentives for private landowners to voluntarily protect T+E species.

In the last Congress, the Miller ESA bill (the former HR2351), gained
108 co-sponsors in the House. Rep. Miller is currently passing a
"Dear Colleague" letter asking for co-sponsors before the bill is
introduced. The following are last year's co-sponsors from MI.
If your member is among those listed, please contact her/him soon to
thank her/him for past support and ask that s/he once again
co-sponsor the Miller ESA bill. (Sorry, there is no number yet, as it
has not been introduced).

Rep. David Bonior (D-MI)
Rep. John Conyers (D-MI)
Rep. Dale Kildee (D-MI)
Rep. Carolyn Kilpatrick (D-MI)-signed on already, please thank her.
Rep. Sander Levin (D-MI)
Rep. Lynn Rivers (D-MI)

Also, Sen. Lautenberg of NJ said that he will introduced a
companion bill to Miller in the Senate when he secures 15
co-sponsors on the bill. Please contact Senator Carl Levin
this week and ask him to sign-on.

Thanks so much for your help! Let me know if you want me to
provide you with additional information such as a copy of the Miller
Sign-on letter or fact sheets on the bill..
