Enviro-Mich message from Dave Dempsey <davemec@voyager.net>

DEQ's annual report on solid waste disposal in Michigan shows an increase
in out-of-state waste of 4.3 percent from fiscal 1997 to 1998 and an
overall increase in waste disposed of 7 percent. The increase in
out-of-state waste boosts the total to 12.3 percent of all waste disposed
of in Michigan landfills, up from 1997 but down from 1996.

Leading sources of out-of-state waste in order, in cubic yards:

Canada, 2,548,815
Indiana, 1,265,613
Ohio, 1,096,897
Wisconsin, 631,774
Illinois, 158,414

Small amounts were reported from Connecticut, Kansas, New York, and

The county importing the largest amount of out-of-state Type II waste in
1998 was Washtenaw, with 1,492,742 cubic yards coming from Canada, as well
as a small amount from Ohio.

Berrien County was second, receiving 1,224,063 cubic yards from Indiana and
158,403 cubic yards from Illinois.

The increase in overall solid waste disposal is troubling in light of
efforts to promote waste reduction and recycling.
