See the following op-ed in Friday's Detroit Free Press in support of better
transit and rail service in Downtown Detroit. Stephen Hands, transportation
advocate from Grosse Pointe Park, presents a thoughtful and well written
rebuttal to Detroit City Council's decision to turn the last rail
right-of-way into Downtown Detroit into a 4 lane wide, 3 mile long driveway
to serve the three riverfront casinos. All though Stephen doesn't say it,
better transportation means fewer cars, fewer VMTs [vehicle miles traveled]
reduced energy consumption and better air for all of us. His focus is on
the need for more pedestrians and fewer cars to revitalize Downtown Detroit.
